    5. Understand the lighting

    Oct 10, 2019

You can use the various lighting options to understand how Enlighten affects the image.

    1. In the Show menu, select Use Defaults.
    2. To see how the level looks without lighting, in the View menu, change the view mode to Unlit.

Without the lighting, the color of the materials is very different.
    3. To see only the diffuse lighting, change the view mode to Lighting Only.

The level appears as if all surfaces use a white material with 100% roughness.

You can use this view to find lighting imperfections in levels. For example, if there are dark areas with no source of shadow, or bright areas with no obvious source of light, these are easy to find.
    4. In the Show menu, disable Lighting Features > Enlighten Indirect Lighting.

The Enlighten indirect lighting includes bounced light and light from the sky and area light sources, but not the direct light from the DirectionalLight actor.
When you disable Enlighten indirect lighting, only the direct lighting is visible. The shadowed areas are completely black. This is useful for understanding which parts of the final image are affected by Enlighten.
    5. In the Show menu, select Use Defaults again.

    6. This Lighting only view is also useful to show the individual contributions of each light source to the final image.
For example, to see only the light from the sky (the Enlighten Texture Environment actor), select the
DirectionalLight actor, and under Details > Light, disable Affects World.

This disables the light from the DirectionalLight, leaving only the light from the Enlighten Texture Environment.
    7. Re-enable Affects World to show the light from the DirectionalLight actor again.
